Professional Sworn (Certified) Legal Translations

Ecrivus International’s Legal Translation

As law is a culture-dependent subject field, legal translation requires both translation skills and specific legal knowledge in the target and source language. Mistranslation of a passage in a contract, for example, could lead to lawsuits and loss of money.

For the translation of certain public documents, such as contracts, acts, legal documents, passports, birth certificates, deeds, residency permits, etc. sworn translation is required. This type of translation can only be conducted by an authorised sworn translator. The translation will be signed and sealed by the authorised sworn translator and it is valid as an official translation. Though the original documents can be sent by any means (fax or e-mail), in sworn translation the translation can only be supplied on paper as it must include the signature and seal of a sworn translator.

Ecrivus International now offers high quality sworn translation services as well as our our Professional Translation Services. From our extensive database of professional mother-tongue translators, our project managers select the person best qualified to handle your legal translation. They have to meet several requirements:

  • They must have at least 2 years of experience in the legal field
  • They must have at least two references for previous legal projects
  • Our legal translators only translate in their native language
  • Our legal translators feel ultimate responsibility for your legal projects
  • Our legal translators have been approved by their national authorities to deliver sworn (certified) translations.
  • They have to work according to our personal step-by-step plan, which consists of 10 essential steps during a translation process.

Quality Assurance in 10 steps

1.   Your legal translation will be analysed in an accurate way

2.   A detailed planning will be drawn up for your translation

3.   Your translation or project will be allocated to a competent sworn translator

4.   A terminology database will be set up for your translation

5.   A CAT-tool will be set up for your translation

6.   Your legal translation will be translated

7.   Quality Control will be used during the translation process

8.   Your translation will be put in the appropriate format (DTP)

9.   The ninth step of our Quality Assurance is the second proofreading of your legal translation by a native speaker

10. And the last step, of course, the Final Quality Control for your translation

Legal Translation Tools of Ecrivus International

Translation Memory (TM)

A Translation Memory is a technology which enables reuse of previously translated material. While Translation Memory systems do not replace human translators, they are important tools to help ensure consistency and enhance efficiency. Translation Memory specifically stores and reuses already created human translations. In addition, a Translation Memory tool helps to increase quality and turnaround of your translations and it contributes to a significant saving in cost as each segment will be translated only once in the translation.

Glossaries
A glossary is a list of terms in a particular specialisation with the definitions for those terms. A bilingual glossary is a list of terms in one language which are defined in a second language or glossed by synonyms in another language. The use of glossaries is very important, as it helps us to ensure consistency and correct usage of terms, throughout the entire translation process.
